As the digital wave continues to sweep across the globe, ensuring that older adults are not left behind by technological advancement has become a critical issue for social inclusion. Guided by its mission of “leveraging communication technologies to promote educational equity,” the Alpha Networks Foundation has long been committed not only to supporting education in underserved communities, but also to addressing the digital learning needs of senior citizens. Beginning seven years ago, the Foundation started sponsoring the “Hands-On Digital Learning: Building Technology Skills” program at the Hsinchu City East District Senior Learning Center, taking concrete action to promote technology education for older adults and help them bridge the digital divide.
The curriculum is jointly designed by the Senior Learning Center and a team of professional instructors, with content rooted in everyday life to gradually guide seniors toward greater familiarity with technology. Starting with the theme “Begin with Your Smartphone,” the classes help participants learn how to choose a suitable smartphone, identify scam messages, and use common and practical applications (apps) such as map navigation, messaging platforms, health management tools, online booking services, and mobile payments. Through hands-on practice and interactive teaching, many senior learners have gradually overcome their initial apprehension toward technology and learned to use smartphones and the internet to enhance their quality of life.
With the Foundation’s long-term sponsorship, the Senior Learning Center has been able to continuously enhance its curriculum and teaching equipment, providing stable learning resources for a growing number of participants. In the classroom, learners progress from early feelings of uncertainty and unfamiliarity to confidently searching for information online, taking photos, and sharing moments from their daily lives on their phones. Each step forward represents a milestone in overcoming digital barriers. Many participants have shared that being able to video call family members living far away, check the weather, or look up real-time bus information has made daily life more convenient and restored their confidence in engaging with society.
The Alpha Networks Foundation noted that its seven consecutive years of sponsorship represent not only a contribution of resources, but also a long-term commitment to “digital inclusion.” Through this initiative, the Foundation hopes to inspire more companies to invest in promoting digital education for older adults, ensuring that technology becomes not a boundary defined by age, but a bridge that connects generations.
Looking ahead, the Foundation will continue to advance its vision of “technology for good” by collaborating with local organizations and educational institutions to promote more diverse digital learning programs. By accompanying older adults as they embrace new technologies with an open mindset, the Foundation aims to help every stage of later life unfold with greater richness, confidence, and freedom in the light of smart living.
