Alpha Networks Contributes the High Port Density 40G Data Center Top-of-Rack Switch to the Open Compute Project.

October 17, 2014, Hsinchu, Taiwan - Alpha Networks Inc.(TAIEX:3380), a global leader in the networking ODM/OEM industry, today proudly announced the contribution of the high-speed, Top-of-Rack (ToR), bare metal, SNQ-60x0-320F series Data Center switch to the Open Compute Project (OCP) community in July, 2014. The SNQ-60x0-320F series switch utilizes Intel’s quad-core and Freescale® Semiconductor’s dual-core QorIQ® P2020 processor to seamlessly interoperate with Broadcom’s StrataXGS® Trident II switch chip. This switch features an incredible high-density design of 32 40Gbps QSPF+ ports, to provide a massive 1,280 Gbps switching capacity in a 1U form factor.

Alpha Networks’ contribution comprises of two switches from the SNQ-60x0-320F series, the SNQ-6070-320F with a Freescale P2020 CPU module and the SNQ-60A0-320F with an IntelTM Atom® C2558 CPU module. The 32 40Gbps QSPF+ ports on these two high port density switches can be expanded to support up to 104 10Gbps SFP+ ports in a 1U form factor. The system is based on Broadcom’s StrataXGS® Trident II Ethernet chip, which enables non-blocking connectivity and excellent line rate performance with low latency able to handle up to 1,280 Gbps.

The SNQ-60x0-320F series is optimized to save space, cost, and power; targeted to be used as the Top-of-Rack (ToR) Data Center switch. Its 40Gbps high-density ports are extendable to 104 10Gbps SFP+ ports using split cables for maximum rack utilization and flexibility of bandwidth support. This switch offers hot-swappable fan modules and power supply (AC or DC) options with either back-to-front or front-to-back airflow fans to provide optimum thermal solutions for different data center deployment scenarios. The SNQ-60x0-320F series offer the best solution for cloud service providers and telecommunications firms to save space, cost, power and lower the operating expenditure.

The SNX-60x0-320F series also supports the Open Network Install Environment (ONIE). ONIE is an Open Compute Project open source initiative contributed by Cumulus Networks that defines an open “install environment” for bare metal network switches. ONIE enables a bare metal network switch ecosystem where users have a choice among different network operating systems. This environment allows users and channel partners to install the target network OS as part of data center provisioning, in the fashion that servers are provisioned.
While the world is progressing with a huge variety of cloud computing applications in people’s everyday lives, public cloud workloads increase dramatically. High performance, high efficiency, and cost effective switches have become the priority in cloud service providers and telecommunication firms’ plan.
